ENUGU STATE — The Enugu Anchor Greenhouse Cluster (EAGC) project has achieved another major milestone with the commencement of land clearing at Owo, preparing the site for a massive 135 greenhouse cluster.
The 3-hectare expanse of land, generously donated by the Enugu State Government, will host the majority of the 150 climate-smart greenhouses contracted under the EWAS project partnership. This large-scale deployment follows the successful pilot phase where 15 greenhouses were established at the Ugwuomu Nike cluster.
Scaling Up Agricultural Infrastructure
The clearing process marks the physical beginning of the expansion phase, turning strategic planning into on-the-ground reality. With the Ugwuomu Nike extension cluster serving as a successful model and cooperative training ground, the new Owo cluster is designed to significantly boost the region’s agricultural output, with a focus on year-round, climate-resilient vegetable production and cooperative ownership. What started as a demonstration facility at Aguobu Iwollo in Ezeagu LGA has now advanced into a statewide pilot and impact-scaling phase.
🌱 Project Scale & Impact
Partnership Ecosystem: Driven by the EWAS project in collaboration with the state government and other strategic partners.
Total Capacity: 150 greenhouses in total, with 15 already deployed.
Current Phase: Site preparation for the remaining 135 greenhouses on a dedicated 3-hectare facility.
The ongoing land preparation involves heavy machinery clearing and leveling the terrain to meet the specific requirements of the greenhouse structures, ensuring optimal layout, structural integrity, and efficient resource management such as solar irrigation systems.
This development is a testament to the strong partnership between the Enugu State Government, the EAGC, and our various partners, all united by a shared vision of empowering local youth and women through sustainable, high-yield agricultural production, improved food systems, and access to nutritious food.
Empowering Farmers Through a Lease-to-Own Model
Crucially, the Enugu State Government, under the administration of His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, is funding these greenhouses using an innovative lease-to-own model. This ensures that farmers make no upfront investment in the infrastructure, but instead pay for it over time. This approach significantly lowers the barrier to entry, enabling true empowerment and asset ownership for local farmers.
